A Short History of Erdington Court Bowls Club
Origins & Early Years The club’s roots go back to the early 20th century when members of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Erdington purchased land on Goosemoor Lane to provide sports facilities for church members. Initially the site was used for cricket and tennis, and in 1925 the bowls section was formed, marking the beginning of what would become Erdington Court Bowls Club.
Development & Growth Over the decades the club developed into a well-established local sporting venue. In 1976 it was reorganised under the Erdington Recreational Trust, a charitable body, after part of the original land was sold for housing. This reorganisation enabled the construction of modern indoor and outdoor artificial bowls greens, allowing members to enjoy bowling throughout the year.
Facilities & Improvements The outdoor green was fully refurbished in 2014, followed by the renewal of the indoor green in 2020. More recently, the clubhouse and social areas have benefited from significant improvements, including a major refurbishment of the bar and lounge in late 2024, along with accessibility enhancements supported by community funding.
Community Role & Activities Erdington Court Bowls Club has always been more than just a sports club. It plays an active role in the local community through initiatives such as Bowl for Health sessions, warm welcome spaces, and support for local charities and groups. The club hosts leagues and events for players of all ages and abilities and is widely recognised for promoting inclusion and participation in sport.
Centenary In 2025, the club celebrated the centenary of bowling at Erdington Court, marking 100 years since the formation of the bowls section. This milestone reflects a century of sporting tradition, community spirit, and continued commitment to the future of the club.
