Erdington Court's A' Team finished the outdoor season of the Birmingham Bowling Association (BBA) by clinching the leadership of the top division - finishing just 2 points ahead of Sherwood Park, with the 'Club's B' team having already secured promotion to that same higher division.

Meanwhile, one of the Court's younger players and captain of their BBA 'B' team- Antony Gould from Sutton Coldfield has reached the BBA's 2 wood singles finals, and also leads a Club triples team in the same finals event.

The six rink all-weather green at the Court's Bowling Green Close home was full to capacity for the return friendly match against Handsworth Wood. Eight players on each rink meant that 48 players in total took part in this mammoth bowling event - with Handsworth Wood failing to end the Courts' two-year unbeaten home run. After a close first half, Erdington pulled away to finish winners - with a score of 136 to 53 shots.Winning Erdington Court rink with a score of +29 was: Andrew Menniss from Sutton Coldfield, Phil Johnson, Chris Reid and Tim Hartland - all from Erdington and Pype Hayes.

The annual outdoor Club men against ladies match ended with a win for the ladies - aided by some curious rules that some would say, were designed to aid the ladies!

The semi finals of the prestigious Thomas Trophy also took place in preparation for the Club's finals week end on Saturday 2nd September/ morning of Sunday 3rd September. It will be all-Suttonian contest and the winning teams going forward are:Team 1 - Geoff Bryant, Arthur Price and Pam Ellis,Team 2 - Dave Mitchell, Roy Webster and Michelle Blakey. Spectators are welcome to attend the finals week-end. Call 0121 373 2440 for more details.

The Club welcomes new members of all abilities and offers courses of free coaching. You can view their web site at http://www.erdingtoncourtbowlsclub.org.uk/ and or follow them on Facebook at: Erdington Court Bowls Club. The 3-week Summer of Season of Evening Bowls came to a close on Thursday 24th August with 24 bowlers competing in the Ladies versus Men (with a twist) competition which the Ladies won 47 v 36.

There were three "twists" during the game.

On end three the men had to bowl left handed and on end 6 the men had to bowl their bowls between their legs ("tweeners"). "Irish" bowls were played on end 9 where the jack was delivered by the lady skip after all other bowls had been delivered.

Apart from being quite challenging this fun format produced plenty of humorous sights most of which were recorded on film. The game finished after 12 ends when players retired to the lounge for a well earned drink and a light supper.

Prizes were awarded as follows:-

Ladies winning rink: Terry Yates, Mary Webster and Joyce Terry

Men's winning rink: Bill Ensor, Phil Johnson and Tim Hartland

Best "Irish" Bowls rink: Elaine Woods, Linda Sullivan and Pat Court

Best "Tweener"" rink: John Utting, Roy Webster and Mike Kilby

In total 32 players took part during the 3-week evening bowls season so thanks to everyone for their support.

Erdington Court's week began with the Club's Birmingham Bowling Association (BBA) 'B' team securing promotion to the 'A' Division - where their 'A' team looks likely to win the league, with one match to go.

In two all-Erdington contests in the BBA 4 wood quarter finals, Rob Robinson beat Antony Gould and Allen Onion won against Paul Vaughan.

The Court ended the week on a high, beating one of the City's strongest Clubs in a friendly at Bowling Green Close, maintaining their 2 year home record. They won 115: 58 against Kings Heath in a 5 rink contest.

Despite a heavy programme of inter-Club fixtures and internal Club competitions, the Club managed to slot in the annual Ellis Brewer Trophy held in honour of two prominent Club members - Ken Ellis and Bob Brewer. Both still actively play for the Club and led their respective squads totalling over 25 players. The result was a win for the Ken Ellis squad 79:64.

Erdington Court welcomes new members of all abilities and offers 4 week's free coaching before joining. For more details, call 0121 373 2440 or visit their web site at www.erdingtoncourtbowlsclub.org.uk. You can also visit them on Facebook at Erdington Court Bowls Club.

John Pritchard's rink ran away from the start and finished 29-9 winners. Ron Statham led extremely well and was well supported by John Green and Mike Kilby.

The second rink lead off was Gary Smith who rarely missed the jack by more than 12 inches (30 cm). Ian Parton-Smith and Steve Mason followed and in a low scoring match the scores were level with 5 ends to play. The next end proved decisive with Skip Peter Yates adding to the two bowls held by Erdington.

The final score was 19-12 in Erdington's favour.

In the end we had a good win yesterday , Erdington Court 64 to St Barbara's 53.

At half time we were taking a bit of a beating and our 2-year unbeaten run at home was looking in jeopardy.

Fortunately the Erdington Court teams all dug deep and we ended up winning on three of the four rinks.

Winning rink was Mary Webster, Colin Heath, John Green and Tim Hartland.

Winning rink winners get a scratch card each as a prize - and Mary Webster was lucky enough to win £10 so it was a profitable afternoon.! In fact the Webster family had a good day as Mary's husband Roy, won a bottle of wine in the raffle.

Erdington Court 's 6 outdoor all-weather rinks turned white when 40 club members took part in the annual Summer Cup. This event which only started last year proved extremely popular again. It is the only match in the Erdington Court Summer bowling calendar when a ladies team plays against a men's team.

Lady Captain Pat Court from Wylde Green marshalled a strong ladies team and hopes were high as the Erdington Court ladies teams in the Birmingham District Women's Bowling Association leagues are doing very well this year. Men's Captain, Peter Yates also from Sutton Coldfield, looked a little nervous as bowling commenced. Competition was particularly fierce on rink 1 where the men's team skippered by Mike Kilby was up against a ladies team skippered by his partner Eileen Merrick!!

As the event progressed, most games remained close although the men started to edge ahead towards the end - and eventually took the cup for the second year running.

Prizes were awarded as follows:

Best Ladies Rink: Pam Ellis, Beryl Robinson, Ann Mason and Eileen Merrick.

Best Men's Rink: John Green, Roy Webster, Eddie Dodd and Ken Bournes.

Cactus Award: Irene Dodd.

"Best Behind" Award: Bill Ensor

Club spokesperson Ray Woods said,

"We are a competitive Club but we want our members to have lots of fun too. This event - organised by Peter Yates aims to combine the best of both - and the turnout confirms how popular it was. The great thing about bowls is that is a mixed sport for the whole family."

Erdington Court welcomes new members and can be contacted on 0121 373 2440 or via their web site at www.erdingtoncourtbowlsclub.org.uk. You can also follow them on Facebook at Erdington Court Bowls Club..
