Erdington Court ended the year with 4 evening and afternoon indoor leagues in full swing - with over 70 members in total taking part.Leading the Thursday night mixed triples League at present is the team led by Chris Hall - and including Dean Mortiboys and Denise Szostek. However this could all be about to change with the imposition of handicaps on the leading teams - based on their first half performance.

The keenly contested annual 'Road to Santa' pairs indoor competition also attracted over 30 Club members and took place over three week ends. Winners of the Cup were Chris Hall for the second year and partnered by John Utting. Runners up were Ken Ellis and Jean Whitney. Elaine Woods and Dean Mortiboys won the separate Plate competition.

The year ended with the annual boxing day morning fun roll-up - again attracting over 30 members and friends to re-visit the all-weather outdoor green. Victorian Bathurst retained the 16 and under title. Ray Woods was the overall winner of the Scapagrene trophy, first awarded in 1976. This was the first year that he had taken part.

In the new year, The Club's Sandy Powell mixed triples Competition begins with a prize of afternoon tea at a top local hotel for the winners - kindly provided by Jarrod Morgan Financial Planning of Lichfield.

The Club has seen an increase of 8-10% in its' Winter indoor membership since its open day in October. For several weeks, over 21 new members have been receiving coaching from Sutton based veterans Jean and Clive Smith.

New investment at the Club has also continued with installation of new step-down stanchions on the indoor green and the acquisition of a defibrillator.

Erdington Court Bowls Club held its annual open day to publicise its winter indoor arena and evening leagues - attracting over 150 visitors - including Birmingham's Lord Mayor Councillor Anne Underwood, from Sutton Coldfield. She was told that 40-50% of Erdington Court's members are ladies and that the majority of members come from Sutton Coldfield.

Erdington Councillors Robert Alden, Bob Beauchamp and Gareth Moore also attended. Councillor Beauchamp won the £10 meat voucher donated by Wicketts Butchers of Gravelly Lane!

The indoor arena is the only one of its kind on the north side of the City and south of Tamworth and many members of other outdoor clubs join for the Winter.

Spokesman Ray Woods said,

"We distributed over 15,000 door to door leaflets for the event as well as publicity from local papers such as the Birmingham Mail and the Sutton Coldfield Observer - and support from Mike Bushell at the Sutton Expo - and there was a great response.

"Over 10 members were recruited on the day and a similar number have expressed an interest in joining our free indoor coaching courses.Every indoor rink and some of our all-weather outdoor rinks were occupied by potential new members."

"Johnsons Skoda in Erdington, one of our sponsors had a display of their cars - and Boston Bowls from Lincolnshire were on hand to advise on bowls woods, clothing and equipment. They are at Birmingham Indoor Bowls Club on Tuesday 24th October between 10am and 3pm for anyone who missed them.We also welcomed Pam Collins of Utility Warehouse in Sutton Coldfield, David Heilbronn of Will Writing Services and Mark Jones and Diane Parkes from

John Taylor Hospice."

As the outdoor season came to a slightly rainy end, Erdington Court players came to the fore in the Birmingham Bowling Association's (BBA) finals.

Rob Robinson from Sutton Coldfield won the individual Champion of Champions - Phil Bond, Paul Vaughan and Gary Smith won the triples and Richard Brittan the singles. Antony Gould won the individual competition.

Ray Woods, Club spokesman said,

" We didn't have it all our own way and it was a mixed bag - however our top players can be proud of their overall performance on behalf of the Club."

Meanwhile, outdoor Captain Peter Yates led a team against a President's Team skippered by President Dave Mitchell - both from Sutton.

A total of 32 Club players took part in the game which for the most part was a close fought affair, none closer than rink 5 where the Captain and President battled it out to an honourable draw. The final result over the 5 rinks was 89 to the Captains Team and 59 to the President's Team.

Captain Peter's winning rink comprised Mary Heath, John Utting and Geoff Bryant. President David's winning rink was Pam Ellis, Dave Ballantyne and Pat Court.

Unlike many local clubs who close up shop for the winter Erdington Court members do not pause for breath - as they open up their 4 rink indoor arena ready to welcome members from other Clubs.

This week they were at the Sutton Expo in the Parade promoting their open day on Saturday 7th October from 1pm - 5pm - and later in the month, their evening league programme kicks off. A new reduced fee applies for other Club members wishing to enter just one of the leagues.

Erdington Court's A' Team finished the outdoor season of the Birmingham Bowling Association (BBA) by clinching the leadership of the top division - finishing just 2 points ahead of Sherwood Park, with the 'Club's B' team having already secured promotion to that same higher division.

Meanwhile, one of the Court's younger players and captain of their BBA 'B' team- Antony Gould from Sutton Coldfield has reached the BBA's 2 wood singles finals, and also leads a Club triples team in the same finals event.

The six rink all-weather green at the Court's Bowling Green Close home was full to capacity for the return friendly match against Handsworth Wood. Eight players on each rink meant that 48 players in total took part in this mammoth bowling event - with Handsworth Wood failing to end the Courts' two-year unbeaten home run. After a close first half, Erdington pulled away to finish winners - with a score of 136 to 53 shots.Winning Erdington Court rink with a score of +29 was: Andrew Menniss from Sutton Coldfield, Phil Johnson, Chris Reid and Tim Hartland - all from Erdington and Pype Hayes.

The annual outdoor Club men against ladies match ended with a win for the ladies - aided by some curious rules that some would say, were designed to aid the ladies!

The semi finals of the prestigious Thomas Trophy also took place in preparation for the Club's finals week end on Saturday 2nd September/ morning of Sunday 3rd September. It will be all-Suttonian contest and the winning teams going forward are:Team 1 - Geoff Bryant, Arthur Price and Pam Ellis,Team 2 - Dave Mitchell, Roy Webster and Michelle Blakey. Erdington Court's week began with the Club's Birmingham Bowling Association (BBA) 'B' team securing promotion to the 'A' Division - where their 'A' team looks likely to win the league, with one match to go.

In two all-Erdington contests in the BBA 4 wood quarter finals, Rob Robinson beat Antony Gould and Allen Onion won against Paul Vaughan.

The Court ended the week on a high, beating one of the City's strongest Clubs in a friendly at Bowling Green Close, maintaining their 2 year home record. They won 115: 58 against Kings Heath in a 5 rink contest.

Despite a heavy programme of inter-Club fixtures and internal Club competitions, the Club managed to slot in the annual Ellis Brewer Trophy held in honour of two prominent Club members - Ken Ellis and Bob Brewer. Both still actively play for the Club and led their respective squads totalling over 25 players. The result was a win for the Ken Ellis squad 79:64.
